I have recently started with a fresh install of MacOS, and this time I’ve tried to avoid installing too many software packages. I’d like to minimise the number of applications that need to run something at boot, as these take both time and precious memory.
So here is my list (installed in this order too):
- Rectangle - open source window manager
- Firefox - privacy focused browser
- iTerm2 - terminal
- Homebrew - package manager
- 1Password - password manager
- Docker Desktop
- VS Code - editor
- SuperHuman - email client
- Slack - messaging
- Zoom - video conferencing
- Arq - backups
- YT Music - Indie app that streams from Youtube Music
- Steam - game package
- AppCleaner - thorough deleter of apps
- SourceTree - source control GUI
- TorBrowser - web browser
- GPG Tools - encryption tools
- Cyberduck - SFTP client
- Brave browser - Privacy focused Chromium browser
- QGIS - Geospatial app
- 0xED - hex editor
- Pixelmator - Image editor
- ImageOptim - Image compressor
- LibreOffice - Office package (free)
And the Brew packages installed:
ohmyzsh
- shell
autojump
- directory helper
git
-flow - source control
jq
- JSON formatter
awscli
- Amazon Web Service CLI
elixir
- Programming language
Software not installed (so far):
- Google Chrome - I’m hoping the Brave Browser will be good enough
- Spotify - I’ve been listening to Youtube Music for the last few weeks, and haven’t felt the need for Spotify.
- Any databases - These now live solely within a Docker container, and are only loaded when needed.
